The must-know basics, important terms, and real-world advice on one of the world's favorite casino games — all here.
1. Master the Basic Blackjack Strategy
The good news first: novices don't have to leave things to chance. There is a convenient cheat sheet that considers probability and assists you in making improved decisions at the table. It's totally legal, freely available online, and presented in easy-to-read charts and graphs. Most players even use this approach in conjunction with some of the best blackjack systems to make their play more organized.
This so-called Basic Strategy for Blackjack is a collection of rules for mathematically optimal plays. If you use it, you can eliminate the house edge in the long run. Below, we've listed the most significant rules, divided into Hard Hands (no Ace), Soft Hands (with Ace), and Pairs. Keep in mind, however, that even optimal strategy can't guarantee a win.
Hard Hands
- 8 or less: Hit
- 9: Double Down if dealer shows 3–6, otherwise Hit
- 10: Double Down if dealer shows 2–9, otherwise Hit
- 11: Double Down if dealer shows 2–10, otherwise Hit
- 12: Stand if dealer shows 4–6, otherwise Hit
- 13–16: Stand if dealer shows 2–6, otherwise Hit
- 17–21: Stand
Soft Hands
- 13–15: Double Down if dealer shows 5–6, otherwise Hit
- 16–18: Double Down if dealer shows 2–6, otherwise Stand
- 19: Double Down if dealer shows 6, otherwise Stand
- 20–21: Stand
Pairs
- A–A: Split
- 2–2: Split if dealer shows 2–7, otherwise Hit
- 3–3: Split if dealer shows 2–7, otherwise Hit
- 4–4: Split if dealer shows 5–6, otherwise Hit
- 5–5: Do not split. Double Down if dealer shows 2–9, otherwise Hit
- 6–6: Split if dealer shows 2–6, otherwise Hit
- 7–7: Split if dealer shows 2–7, otherwise Hit
- 8–8: Always Split
- 9–9: Split if dealer shows 2–9 (except 7), otherwise Stand
- 10–10: Stand
- J–J: Stand
Keep in mind: no matter how good your math is, blackjack is a game of chance. The strategy is a tool — not a guarantee of victory.
2. Know Why the Dealer's Upcard Matters So Much
When your hand totals twelve, the dealer's upcard should be the determining factor.
If the upcard of the dealer is a low card (2–4), the dealer will typically have to draw several times in order to reach a minimum of 17. Under this scenario, you're typically better off holding.
But if the dealer's upcard is a good card (like 9 or 10) and you have less than 16, hitting is usually the best play. If the dealer's upcard is an Ace, you would hit with 17 or less.
Here's the dealer bust probability with their upcard:
- 2 = 35.3%
- 3 = 37.5%
- 4 = 40.2%
- 5 = 42.8%
- 6 = 42.0%
- 7 = 25.9%
- 8 = 23.8%
- 9 = 23.3%
- 10–K = 21.4%
- Ace = 12.07%
3. Practice Proper Bankroll Management
Your bankroll is simply your gambling budget — the amount you're comfortable losing without jeopardizing your finances. Following it correctly will keep you in control.
Here's one way to do it:
- Divide your total budget into units (e.g., 1,000).
- Subdivide those into session units. You can, for example, divide 100 units per session. That means you would lose 10 full sessions before your bankroll is completely depleted.
- Reallocate your bankroll after losing or winning to reflect your new reality.
The most important: always match your bankroll to your financial and emotional state. Responsible gaming is never about gambling money you don't possess.
4. Refrain from Using the Martingale System
The Martingale method is simple: double your bet after every single defeat until finally you win, recovering your lost money as well as making a profit. On paper, it is foolproof.
In reality, though, one bad streak can drain you completely. Because bets escalate so quickly, you might hit the table limit or run out of money before winning.
Be cautious around progressive betting schemes — they don't beat the game, and they'll give you a false impression of control.
5. Play Blackjack for the Fun of It
You can experiment with popular systems like Martingale, Paroli, or Fibonacci, but there is no system that can guarantee constant profits.
Especially in online casinos, where card counting cannot be used. The cards are being shuffled automatically after each hand, and even in live games the shoe is getting changed frequently.
Your best strategy is simple: play with an honest budget, bet responsibly, and enjoy the game for what it is. It is not easy to match blackjack as a simple adrenaline experience at the casinos.
